RAfter passing into Greece we started to see little roadside shrines in the shapes of little Greek Orthodox Churches. We had seen a little shrine in Albania that had a crescent moon on it. This must be rather a poor part of Greece and the roads were worse than Albania till we hit the motorway. It was deserted and smooth and we cruised akong as though in a plane. We ate some lunch at the table while driving; something you could never do in Albania with all the swerving and sudden braking necessary to avoid hazards.
We started to drive over steep gorges and through one tunnel after another. We stopped at a petrol station and I was confronted with my first squat toilet. It was ok as it was clean and flushed.
When we came off the motorway we drove over a mountain where it began to raib and into a beautiful cool valley where we stopped to eat. We ate under a cool canopy of plane trees beside a clear running water of the river Louros. We had omlettes and Greek salad and the most wonderful thick tzatziki. It was simple and delicious.
We then drove on past the paleolithic caves and Roman vila and old forts and churches that spoke of the long history of the area. Then we were driving through a tunnel and over a bridge that can swivel to let ships pass and we were on Lefkada and driving through the main town also called Lefkada. Then drove over another mountain or two and right at the tip of Lefkada the little port of Vasiliki was waiting for us and our camping site. We set up camp in about 20 min and to enjoy the evening cool we went for a walk to splash our feet in the sea and see where Katka and Maros had stayed in the past.
It was the end of our journey south. Now it only remains to relax and then travel north.
